FNAC, the French equivalent of Media Markt, both large electronics retailers, has sponsored photomarathons in Belgium before. Now, the French chain is sponsoring photography events all over France. They only require three photos of three themes, so it’s hardly a photomarathon, but that’s what they are calling it.

Get the lowdown from their website (in French) or their Facebook group.

Thanks to myricmemije for alerting me.

Alexandra Dragoi, who last year won first prize in the youth section at a photomarathon in Romania, is now having her first solo exhibition. Impressive, at 17 years. More here.

Hasvik in northern Norway, pretty much as far north as you can go in Europe, is organizing a photographic event right now which is pretty close to a photomarathon. It started today, March 4, at 8am this morning, and will run until Sunday, March 7. Kids up to sixteen get six themes, adults get 10 themes.
Participation is 50 Norwegian Kroner, which is just over 6 euros. More here.

The day was held under the moniker Maratet 10 and aims to become a yearly recurring event. Keep an eye on it.

Thanks to Darren Paine for pointing me in the right direction.

To celebrate May Day, the Photo Center NW (Facebook group), in Seattle, organizes a 24 hour photography event they call Long Shot. In their words:

Long Shot enables photographers to band together for 24 hours in order to build community. This is an exciting annual event that not only supports the education programs at the Photo Center, but is fun! There are so many ways to be involved in the Long Shot experience: teams build community among fellow friends, co-workers, and professionals. Some join in on the experience as individual photographers that may or may not meet up with others along the journey. Others sponsor a Long Shot photographer. [...]

It’s not a photomarathon in that the participants don’t get to work with predefined themes but get to choose themselves how they want to fill the 24 hours.

The event starts on April 30 at 6pm and runs until May 1 at 6pm.

Halberstadt

Halberstadt in Germany does a mini marathon on October 9 this year. Gotta love the German punktlichkeit! They plan ahead!

The event lasts a whole day, but the photomarathon itself, organized by Photoclub Halberstadt, is only a mere two hours, running from 10am to 12pm, but participants have to shoot no less than 12 photos on 12 themes!
They haven’t got their schedule online yet, but judging from last year’s event, this should be followed by an exhibition starting at 2pm as well as other events.

Participation costs 10 euros.

Bath will see a 10 hour photomarathon on May 1, organized by Fringe Arts Bath. Participation is only seven pounds and will land you a roll of film. Indeed, it’s analogue.

They’ve got a Facebook group and registration is done through email at bathphotomarathon@gmail.com.

Then, there’s a lot of chatter on the web about volunteering for an upcoming photomarathon in Reykjavik, Iceland. It wouldn’t be the first time Reykjavik would host a photomarathon, but, interestingly, no actual event information seems to be out there.

Through the website south-east.info, seven concurrent photomarathons are organized in seven cities in south eastern Europe. This is already happening this coming weekend, 13 and 14 February, so hurry hurry if you want to put in your two cents.

The cities are Banja Luka (Bosnia), Osijek (Romania), Pecs (Hungary), Pristina (Kosovo), Ruse (Bulgaria), Sibiu (Romania) and Skopje (Macedonia).
Interestingly, none of the cities are major cities in the region.

The challenge will be 10 themes in 24 hours, in whichever city you choose to participate. Though it won’t be too much of a challenge, as all themes will be announced on the morning of the 13th.

Check out their website for details.

Blogger decided to discontinue their service of hosting their blogs externally, that is, on your own domains. Nice about this facility was that it was possible to tightly integrate their blogs into your own sites.
Photomarathon.eu has now moved to Wordpress, which is quite an effort (and not yet finished at this moment) as where Blogger could be integrated into your own site, with Wordpress, it’s the other way around; that is, you have to adapt your pages to work with Wordpress.
Anyway, I took the opportunity to move the upcoming events listing to the photomarathon group on Upcoming. Don’t hesitate to subscribe (or submit your own events, if you know of any).
The participate and results pages will be upgraded when/if photomarathon.eu participates in organizing another photomarathon.

In the meantime, listings were added for Berlin, where they plan to have their tenth photomarathon on the 19th of June. Keep an eye on their website, though, as they haven’t secured the date, yet.

Canberra, Australia’s capital, is hosting that country’s first every photomarathon on March 27. They allow for registration through EventBrite, which is pretty cool. Their tickets go for around 40 Australian Dollars. Not too shabby, considering their main sponsor, Lowepro, is putting in over 1300 dollars of prizes.
Their event lasts 12 photos and 12 hours.

Denmark, currently the longest running photomarathon in the world, is up again for their next event on August 28 this year. They’ve got a knack for organizing it in multiple cities, so also keep an eye on their website.

Update: Turns out that the brains behind the Canberra photomarathon is no one but Chris Oosthuizen, who participated in the 2007 Pretoria photomarathon.

Rainbow Roll

On Sunday, March 28, 2010 Fotomission and Tropicolor will host the 6th South Beach Photomarathon at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. As with previous Miami Beach photomarathons, the term ‘marathon’ is used loosely, this time only six topics needing to be photographed over a period of five hours.
As usual, the topics will be kept secret until the event day and will be purposefully vague to give the contestants plenty of room for self-expression. The best photos from each topic will be selected, and from those the first, second and third place winners will be awarded cash and other prizes. The top twenty-five entries will also be exhibited at the Tropicolor Gallery during the month of May.

More info and registration at the fotomission website. Registration fee is a hefty $50, $30 for students.
